| 1. In the
application, we ask all participants to write their faith autobiography,
and the deadline is at least three weeks before we begin the Exercises.
Shortly after the deadline, our group of directors gets together to
assign directees to directors. We sit in a circle and place all faith
autobiographies in the middle. We pray for guidance and God's presence
in the choice. Then, we each choose an autobiography at
random. When finished reading, we return it to the center of the
circle and choose another. When we have all read all autobiographies, we
go around the room and discuss which person stood out for us, which one
we are somewhat afraid to consider, and the reasons for our
comments.
Applications that include availability information,
such what time or day of the week is best helps the director fit a
directee's schedule into his or her own.
After we have all had the chance to speak about our
choice, we discuss any overlaps and any thoughts we might have about
someone else's directee choice.
We pray some more, and finally assign directee to
director. Each directee goes home with the autobiography of the person
he or she will direct that year. Our job then is to contact the person,
introduce ourselves, and invite him or her to the first meeting.
The middle of the first meeting is scheduled to
include time for director to introduce him or her self to the directee.
We always stress that directees have the freedom to change directors if
it isn't working out. (We actually never had anyone do so.) |

2. Another
way to assign directee to director is to hold a preliminary meeting with
all directees and directors attending. Before this meeting, directors
get together to pray about the choices made at the meeting.
At the meeting, directors introduce themselves aloud
(one at a time) to the directees. After all directors have told the
audience about themselves, the directees decide who they would like to
have as a director. Each directee writes his or her choice on a
slip of paper. Directors later match who will direct whom using the
preferences of the directee. With this system it is possible for
some director to end up with too many directees, and some without any,
so you will have to decide what you will do in that case, and what you
will say to the directee who is not assigned to the person he or she
chose at the meeting.
One benefit of this system is that directees feel they
have some control over who directs them.
